Challengers

To provide older adolescents ages 16-21 who are living in long-term foster care, with an opportunity to learn and practice independent life skills in a safe and supportive environment.

 The following services are provided to both Bert’s Place and Challengers Participants:

Challengers Advance

(An Independent Living Program for Young Adults 18-21 years of age)

Mission & Goals: To provide young adults, ages 18-21 who have demonstrated acquisition and mastery of a variety of independent life skills with an opportunity to practice acquired skills in a community based setting.

Challengers Beyond

(An After-Care Program for Young Adults, post age 21, and Emancipated from the Foster Care System)

Mission & Goals: To provide a year of aftercare services to former Participants of Challengers Independent Living Program. Specifically, to ensure further development of responsible adults, positive role models and leaders, Challengers will provide case management services, supervision and a stipend for 12 months post discharge from foster care.

Population Served

Challengers serves teens in long term foster care. Participants served suffer from a variety of clinical issues, ie. sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional trauma, neglect and abandonment.

• Spring 2004, two past Participants graduated from 4 year colleges, Trinity College in Washington D.C. and the university of Maryland Baltimore County.
• Over the past six years, Participants have saved well over $100,000.00 in their Challengers accounts.
• Our most recent graduate purchased a home.
• Challengers continues to maintain a 100% gradation rate from public high schools, 26 teens.
• We have a 90% employment rate.
• Bert’s Place Residential Group Home for Boys moved into a larger house in December 2008.
• We expanded by building a new house and opening Bert’s Place TOO Residential Group Home for Girls in July 2009
• February 2012 Challengers expanded and Challengers East is now opened and full to capacity. We added 7 apartments at Hillendale Apartments and now 14 more teens in foster care receive service.

BERT’S PLACE

To provide teens, between the ages of 15 to 18 living in foster care, with comprehensive life skills services and training in order to prepare them for a less restrictive living environment  such as Challengers.....
